Why Multifamily Needs EV Charging
For any EV driver to hit the road with confidence, they need to be able to charge their car at home. In most multifamily properties, the resident doesn’t own their parking spot, meaning they can't install their own EV charging equipment. It is up to the property owner to provide this resource for their tenants. Without available EV charging, residents will find it difficult to make the switch to EV, and property owners will see EV drivers looking for housing where charging is provided.
BGE understands this dilemma, and has created this program (EVsmart Multifamily Property Rebate) to make it easier than ever for multifamily property owners in Maryland to offer this important amenity to their tenants and help bring cleaner air to the region. This program also aims to help the state reach its goal of having 300,000 zero-emission vehicles on the road by 2025.
How the program works
Multifamily property owners with an active BGE electric account can receive a rebate of 50% off the purchase, warranty, and installation of eligible Level 2 smart charging equipment and DC Fast Charging (DCFC) stations—up to $25,000 per site!
See how the funding breaks down here:
Level 2 AC charging stations (3.7-7.4 kW) can charge an EV in around 3-4 hours. With the EVsmart program, you can save up to $5,000 per port installed, with a project cap at $25,000.
Here's how much you could save on commercial AC stations. (Actual prices may vary).
- Hardware cost (8 ports) — $23,520
- Installation ($3K/unit) — $12,000
- TOTAL— $35,520
- 50% Rebate — $17,760.00
DC fast charging stations (100-350kW) charge an EV in around 15-30 minutes. With the EVsmart program, you can save up to $15,000 per unit installed, with a project cap of $25,000.
Here's how much you could save on DC stations. (Actual prices may vary).
- Hardware cost (1 unit) — $43,250
- Installation ($21K/unit) — $21,000
- TOTAL— $64,250
- 50% Tax Credit — $15,000.00 (max)
