You may already be familiar with the differences between AC and DC charging, as well as the specifics of DC charging. If you’re considering investing in high-power DC charging stations, this article will cover the basics of smart charging with DC charging stations.
What is Smart Charging?
Smart charging maximizes the power delivered to the vehicle while respecting grid connection constraints. It encompasses features that optimize the electric vehicle charging infrastructure and minimize the impact of the charging load (electricity demand) on the grid. Smart charging works by controlling the power and timing of charging sessions. It takes into account the needs of customers and vehicles, the limitations of the charging infrastructure, the grid, and auxiliary networks, as well as energy production and electricity costs.
The goal of smart charging is therefore to distribute electricity accordingly between charging stations and/or different groups of charging stations at the same site.
Smart Charging Management
Smart charging management refers to the power allocated specifically to charging stations. This power is distributed intelligently within a single charging station. The charging stations share the total power dedicated to the charging site to charge each vehicle optimally without ever exceeding the total power capacity. This configuration can be set up manually during installation or through management software. It involves managing energy distribution at the charging station level.

Businesses benefit from the utility of these smart charging features as they allow for more efficient use and distribution of energy based on site priorities. Additionally, the load balancing that occurs at the station or site level helps businesses avoid costly grid upgrades, makes more energy available for EV charging, and reduces overall electricity costs.
Simultaneous Smart Charging
Simultaneous smart charging is also a smart charging feature. It primarily relies on managing charging within the station between its different connectors. Depending on its specifications, a DC charging station can simultaneously charge multiple vehicles in DC or a combination of vehicles in DC and AC. The example below shows an EVBox Troniq Modular simultaneously charging an electric truck and an electric vehicle in DC.

Load balancing and simultaneous charging will greatly benefit businesses that operate and manage fleet depots, public fast-charging stations, and workplace parking areas.
What Does Smart Charging Mean for Businesses?
If you’re a business looking to invest in electric vehicle charging, then take advantage of smart charging features with next-generation charging stations to provide the best charging experience for EV drivers while managing your energy expenses.
