2G and 3G networks are coming to an end all around the world. To get ahead of this transition, EVBox charging station owners with earlier models have a window of opportunity to upgrade or replace them with newer models.

If you are an owner of an earlier model of EVBox BusinessLine or HomeLine station that does not communicate with 4G+ networks, get ready to upgrade or replace your station now to avoid any disruptions.

What is happening

Sunset of 2G and 3G networks

In the coming years, major countries will no longer use 2G and 3G networks including Netherlands, Norway, and Belgium. These changes will take effect as early as 2025. The performance of EVBox stations running on 2G and 3G networks, such as G2 and most G3 EVBox BusinessLine and HomeLine stations, will be impacted as they are not yet 4G ready.

How to be 4G ready

We are offering two solutions for EVBox customers who have BusinessLine or HomeLine stations running on 2G and 3G networks. Customers can upgrade the hardware of their current station(s) to 4G* or replace them with our award winning, next generation charging stations, EVBox Liviqo or EVBox Livo.

*Note: 4G networks can communicate with 5G networks.

FAQs

2G and 3G networks are expected to stop working in e.g. the following countries:

- Netherlands: Q4 2025

- Belgium: 2028

- Norway: Q4 2025

For more information when the 2G and 3G networks will be discontinued in your country, check with your local network providers.

Be aware the station will only have a problem communicating when both the 2G and 3G network will close. If one is still available the stations will still be able to communicate.

All Generation 2 (G2) as well as Generation 3 (G3) PublicLine, BusinessLine and Homeline station models which do not yet have a 4G ChargePoint (modem).

If you have a G2 station which has been upgraded recently to G3, it could be that the station is already 4G ready. Check the ChargePoint model type of your station. See: Where can you find the ChargePoint model type information of your station?

If the ChargePoint model type starts with a ‘G2-‘ your station is a G2 station, for example G2-M908 is a G2 station.

If the ChargePoint model type starts with ‘G3-’ your station is a G3 station or upgraded from G2 to G3, for example a station with this ChargePoint model type G3-M5320E-F2642 is a G3 station.

See ‘Which EVBox stations will be impacted?’ to check the table of ChargePoint Model types under above to see if your station already has a 4G modem or not.

  • If you are running an EVBox station on Everon, then you can see this information under the details tab of the station. It is shown as the Station model
  • If you are not running the station on Everon then check the boot notification of the station in the OCPP logs.
  • If your Station model is Livo or Liviqo then you are already 4G ready

Our new EVBox Livo and EVBox Liviqo Stations are 4G ready. 

All G4 EVBox Elvi v.3 stations as well as all our BusinessLine G4 Stations.

The 4G Upgrade Hardware + Service kit for G2 stations is only available in Netherlands and Belgium.

To upgrade your BusinessLine G2 station or cluster, you require:

  • 1 x 4G Hardware upgrade kit + onsite service
  • 1 x 4G Hardware Connector upgrade kit per connector + onsite service per connector

The Hardware kits and Onsite Service will be invoiced separately.

When you ordered a 4G upgrade kit via your reseller, installer or via our campaign website, you will receive a quotation for approval.

When you approved the quotation and the order is processed, the expected delivery time for the parts will be Q4 2024.

For installers: if you ordered a 4G Upgrade Hardware kit to upgrade the G3 station of your customer, you can receive a technical manual via your distributor or EVBox contact. 

If you are living in the Netherlands or Belgium and you ordered a 4G Upgrade Hardware + Service kit, the parts will be delivered at the end of December 2024 and at the start of 2025 you will be contacted by our Field Service partner, who will schedule a visit to come onsite to upgrade your station. You will receive two invoices, one for the hardware and one for the labor.

Yes, upgrading to 4G will ensure your station's network is compatible with 5G.

When you upgrade your current G2 or G3 station to become 4G ready, you will have 1 year warranty on the parts which has been replaced as part of the upgrade. The warranty on the station, and those parts which not have been replaced, remains the same.
